I wanted the dialogue and interactions to feel as truthful and recognisable as possible. Mother-daughter relationships are rarely simple; they can be loving and painful in equal measure, filled with affection, frustration, regret, and moments of tenderness that often go unspoken. Early readers of the script connected with the film in very different ways, many recognising elements of their own family dynamics and emotional histories within the exchanges between the characters.

The film was inspired by a desire to explore forms of grief that can sometimes feel difficult to articulate or fully be understood, particularly losses that remain private, invisible, or unresolved over time. Rather than approaching these themes through overt melodrama, I wanted to create something restrained, intimate, and emotionally honest; a film interested less in explanation and more in the quiet ways people attempt to live alongside absence.

From the outset, it was important that the film remained grounded in performance and authenticity. Made on a modest budget, Rae of Sunshine is intentionally intimate in scale, relying heavily on the care, vulnerability, and precision of two remarkable actresses whose performances carry the emotional heart of the piece.

Ultimately, the film is about the fragility of connection: the conversations we wish we had with each other, the years we cannot recover, and the enduring human instinct to reach towards one another despite distance, silence, or heartbreak.
