Director's statement
What we leave behind remains
'in the past' is a deeply personal film that I have wanted to make for many years.Â
Â
While the dialogue and setting are fictionalised, the background narrative is rooted in truth. I wanted to explore the lasting impact that secrets can have on a person’s life.Â
The story follows a middle-aged man who reunites with his former mentor, determined to finally express what was remained unsaid for decades.

My own experience has taught me how difficult it can be to speak openly about childhood trauma, particularly for men. There can be a powerful internal pressure to minimise, rationalise, or simply remain silent about the darker elements that shape us and can become a source of shame.

One of my key aims was for the audience to discover the nature of the meeting alongside the characters, piecing together fragments through the awkward conversation and the unspoken tension. I was interested in the way people carry their history, often communicating far more through what they cannot say than through what they can.

Rather than focusing on the specifics of the events themselves, I wanted to examine their echoes; and the way they continue to shape identity, relationships, and self-perception far longer than one realises. The film relies heavily on performance and subtext, allowing moments of silence and discomfort to speak as loudly as the dialogue.
Â
I also wanted to create a striking tonal dissonance by placing an unsettling conversation within the serene, curated atmosphere of an upscale café.Â
Â
Making in the past has been genuinely cathartic.Â
Â
My hope is that audiences connect with Alan’s courage in confronting Nigel and his attempt at reaching closure, and that the film encourages reflection on experiences that are too often hidden from view.Â
Cast Biographies

Tim Berrington
nigel
Tim Berrington is a seasoned actor with a remarkable career spanning three decades, known for appearances in major productions such as Gangs of London, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and Succession, and films such as World War Z and Sardar Udham.
Â
His portrayal of Nigel is brilliantly measured, his charm and composure serving as the perfect disguise for the character's underlying menace.Â

Kassius Nelson
Jessie
First gaining recognition for her award-winning portrayal of Jade Albright in Hollyoaks, Kassius Nelson has continued her impressive career with a range of performances in international productions such as Dead Boy Detectives, White Lines, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Last Night in Soho and Pirates.

She imbues the role of Jessie with effortless grace, culminating in a final look that is rich with subtext and lingering complexity.

Tom Verrall
alan
Tom Verrall has enjoyed a diverse career across stage and screen, with acting credits including guest roles in Hounded and US series Speechless plus the lead role of Leo in The Verdict.Â
Â
As a writer and director, he is dedicated to character-led storytelling.

As Alan, he delivers a performance that brings both intensity and vulnerability to this intimate, emotive drama.Â
Composer
Ariana May
We were delighted to collaborate with Ariana May, an award-winning film composer and singer songwriter, on the original theme for 'in the past'.
Â
Ariana has a remarkable ability to translate emotion into music, and her exquisite score perfectly complements the tone of the film.
